ASHA-Ray of Hope was established in November 2002 by nine concerned citizens of the South Asian community including physicians, social workers, entrepreneurs and educators who had come across incidents and victims of domestic violence within the South Asian community. They realized the limitless reach of this social epidemic and in response to the lack of awareness and support for the victims formed ASHA-Ray of Hope. These nine trailblazers are:
  • Dr. Rani Lakhi
  • Amar Pandey
  • Dr. Kasturi Rajadhyaksha
  • Shaila Patankar
  • Nita Chabria
  • Sobhana Davda
  • Sujatha Reddy
  • Mira Satiani
  • Dr. Janak Wadwa.
These founding members formed the first Board of Trustees and elected Dr. Rani Lakhi as President for two years (2002-2004).
  • Dr. Rani Lakhi - President
  • Amar Pandey - Vice President
  • Dr. Kasturi Rajadhyaksha - Secretary
  • Shaila Patankar - Treasurer
Under this dynamic group, ASHA-Ray of Hope got organized, achieved non-profit and 501 C(3) status and launched several programs to create awareness and educate the community about domestic violence.

After two successful and productive years, the first Board and Executive Committee members paved the way for a new team. Under the leadership of Mira Satiani as President, ASHA-Ray of Hope continued to expand its horizons. ASHA-Ray of Hope was the proud recipient of a two-year program grant through The Capacity Building Initiative: Immigrant and Refugee Organizations. In addition to financial assistance, this program helped ASHA-Ray of Hope formulate a strategic plan, train its volunteers and provide logistical support as needed. The hard work and selfless dedication of ASHA-Ray of Hope’s volunteers was recognized and appreciated by the community when the organization was selected to receive several awards and recognitions.
